The Quinceañera

My new choral work The Quinceañera premiered May 11 by Grace and Spiritus Chorale of Brooklyn, under the direction of Jason Asbury.

I’ve had the pleasure of accompanying this group for the past year. Grace and Spiritus has a commendable record of new music commissions, and it’s an honor to be included among them.

The 13-minute piece for mixed choir and piano sets a Mexican-American girl’s fifteenth birthday fiesta, an important, often elaborate celebration marking her transition from childhood to womanhood. In the US, the fiesta incorporates European, Native, Middle Eastern, and even Hollywood narratives. Above all, it’s a great party that brings a girl’s family, extended family, and community together.

More performances of the work May 18th and 20th!
